Build A Cabinet Door

In this video i am copying the dimensions of an old cabinet door in order to replace one that is missing in the kitchen.

Figuring the length of the rails is more complicated. Cost per door is around 20 you can get about 6 center panels from each sheet of plywood. Simply sand and stain or paint your shaker cabinet door add some awesome cabinet handles and hinges and you are good to go. Total cut depth will be 1 2.

At 24 deep standard base cabinets allow you to bend over and reach in to retrieve anything at the back. Cut dadoes in cabinet door frames. Figuring the length of the stiles is easy. There are a million ways to make a door but this method is fairly simple and worked with the tools i already had.

1 2 of the panel will slide into the dado on all sides. You can pick any width you want for your cabinet door rails and stiles. Ordinarily this will be the width of a table saw blade. Make cabinets as wide as you like but remember that the wider the doors the greater the tendency to rack and warp.

It took about 15 minutes to make each door not including the time it took for the glue to dry. Make a list of the parts of your diy shaker cabinet doors before you begin. Next you will use the router to create a groove around the perimeter of the inside of the cabinet doors for the panel to sit inside. Begin assembly of the door.

Take the height of the door you want and add 1 8 in. Mark the back of each board so your dado lines up when you assemble your doors. For each one you ll need two stiles the vertical parts two rails the horizontal parts and one panel. I built my cabinet doors with simple frames and floating panels as in the panels float inside the frame.

A flat door panel will usually be made from 25 inch 6 mm plywood the same wood type as the rest of the cabinet. Standard base cabinets measure 34 1 2 high for a 36 high work surface with a 1 1 2 countertop. With the front side of the door facing up use a cabinet hardware jig to attach door handles or pulls in a consistent location. Cut 2 stiles the height of the cabinet doors cut 2 rails the width of the cabinet doors minus 2x the width of the boards 1 3 boards are typically 2 1 2 but it is always a good idea to double check.

How to build cabinet doors if you cut your dado 1 2 deep it s easy to figure out the math for your doors just add 1 to the width and length of the panel. Cut the door panel insert slightly less than the size you need to allow for wood expansion and contraction. I typically use 1 3 boards for mine so they are 2 1 2 wide.
