Fire pit depth really depends on what you want and how into your project you re going to get.
Place one stake in the middle and scrape the ground with the other going around in an even circle.
Cut a piece of string half that width plus two inches for tying and tie stakes to either end.
Remove the sod level the dirt and add paver mix and level out the entire circle surround it with a single ring of pavers.

I built my fire pit using 30 landscaping flagstones and 4 tubes of heavy duty.
