The only downside to a cable clutch is that if you own your car for a long time the cables will eventually wear and stretch and could even break.

Loose cables can often be adjusted but some may need to be replaced. The clutch cable is what connects the clutch pedal and clutch linkage of the transmission together. To release the cable first disconnect it at the clutch housing end. If your clutch system doesn t automatically adjust or there s an issue with your clutch linkage in an automatic adjusting system you may find and possibly fix the problem.

Cables can also loosen or stretch from use so that the clutch doesn t fully release when the pedal is pushed all the way in. There is a threaded sleeve with two nuts on it at the protruding end of the cable. Once the clutch is disengaged you can shift the gears of the transmission safely. The cable connects the clutch pedal pivot directly to the release fork eliminating practically all of the wear points that are found in shaft and lever linkages.

Locate the clutch cable which loops down from the clutch pedal to protrude through the clutch operating lever. Many fords such as the fiesta cortina mk5 and escort mk3 have a self adjusting clutch cable. The clearance is the difference between the cable measurement when the operating lever is at rest and when it is pushed inwards. When you press down on the clutch pedal it causes the cable to pull on the linkage so that the clutch becomes disengaged.

The pedal end of the cable fits between a toothed quadrant and pawl located at the top of the pedal. Too little clutch pedal play leads to clutch slip but too much clutch pedal play can lead to clutch drag.
